I suprised myself and decided to participate the IRTC.

By keeping things simple the details become more apparent and since the
topic is "Minimalism" this time, I decided to use a rather empty symbol and
keep things simple.

I used CSG for the symbol by subtracting and adding toruses, cylinders and 1
box. For creating the darker edges and the beams I used mostly toruses.
All materials have fresnel reflection and have a small-scale bumped normal.
The light and sky are an interaction of light_source with media.
Using focal blur takes care of antialiasing and avoiding ugly jittering
caused by the tiny bumps in the normals.
The focal blur also blurs the shadow in such a way that the light source
seems to be an area light, which it isn't.
Older versions of this image included, it took at about a day of
experimenting to get this result.

regards,
Eli

As no-one else has commented yet...

this may be my favorite pov image.

I wish you luck with your entry.

If I were choosing a pov image to be framed to go on a wall it would be
something very like this.

I'm almost done rendering a more detailed version of this one on 7800x5200
pixels for zazzle.com. :-)
