I think I'm going to stick with this idea for the IRTC.

Thomas, you'd make a good detective as you were really close with what I
was doing. :)

Anyway, it 'is' a grain of sand. I found a great site when looking for
images of a single grain of sand which is here:

  http://www.sandgrains.com/fine_art_prints.htm

These grains are quite exotic and unusual in that they are Maui sand grains
magnified at 200x, which, as you'll see, are made from various sea-life
forms. With this image, I've tried to recreate the blue translucency of the
snailshell images, but used my own model inside the grain. I think it's kind
of working, but I've got to get the natural inclusions a lot better.

(I think I'll try the Brittlestar idea too).

Hope you like it, comments welcome.

   ~Steve~

Very nice! It is calling out for a white plinth and radiosity. If you
have the time :-)

   Thanks Jim! Very welcome. :)

How about this next one then?

     Man, I'm *loving* media...

This was fast; 4 minutes 40 seconds....

Heh, I have the time Stephen, but does PovRay have time for me?

Thank you, I'll give it a go some time.

Ah ha!! microfossils eroded from some rocks and worn down to sand grain
size! I had no clue about the real size of your image, so I was thinking
about larger animals. I am no detective, Steve, but I happen to be a
geologist, so it did not look so alien to me... ;-)

Very beautiful image in any case!!

Thomas

Thank you Thomas! You know, since I found that site I've really taken an
interest in microscopy(?) I think I'll try and do a few more images like
this.

That rocks! The picture I mean. But the render time rocks too. I
think you've found another POV vein to mine.
