Following on, in style, from posts by Ed Jackson and Jim Carter; radiosity based
on Tim Nikias' two pass example from his "Indoor Radiosity Experiments" (see
www.nolights.de)
There's not enough contrast but I wasn't willing to spend more than 15 minutes
rendering, today :)
*gets back to work*

Hmm... yes. Perhaps the red is distracting in this composition (hear me
saying that! while I use it in my own!!). I would expect something darker
there (even red, but very dark).

It's supposed to be distracting ;)

I think the red is good, creates a nice viewpoint in this image. However the
shadow of the left cube distracts me too much :) i would try to make that
area a little more soft/subtle. The colors are great!

OK, I decided to have another play with this file, so here's another version.
The lighting has been changed (though I think I'll reintroduce the orange
reflection from the last version - the strong tint looks better), slightly
darker red block as per Thomas' suggestion, and Lenx said that the shadow was a
little distracting (I agree), so instead of eliminating it I decided to try to
introduce more shadows by moving the light, so that it didn't look as out of
place. The blocks are also a little deeper now, and the new lighting gives it a
bit more dimensionality.

Personally, I like this a lot.
Maybe, if you give the wall some very slight normal, the color banding will
disappear.
