Just a little something I'm working on...
How do I make it so that the room is lit up in the yellowish glow
filtering through the yellow lamp shade?

Radiosity.. but you'll need a really high count to get good results
since the shade is so small compared to the rest of the scene.
If you want to cheat, add a second light_source (dim yellow, natch) in
the same place as the first one, but use projected_though to make it
only shine through the lampshade.. at least, I think that'll work. I
expect you'll want to use the same area light settings as for your
primary light_source.

Well, what technique are you currently using for the lighting? You probably
have to use "filter" on the shade and maybe make the lightsource a little
stronger that it stills shows after getting filtered. I tend to exagherate
things first to get the correct effect, and then tweak the values to a
realistic output.

If you want to light up only the walls in yellowish:
Check if the light source has a yellowish color and
check that in the finish of thee walls and floor "metallic" is set in the
reflection {} item.
If the air should be lit, you will need the media statement.
Is this what you meant ?

Is it filter or transmit? I can *never* remember which is which... :-(
As you probably know, the shade is currently double illuminated, and the
light is an area light. (The scene also uses radiosity; it looks wrong
without it.)
Anyway, I'll give at a go and see what happens...
