The candles themselves look great, is that using media?

Yes, I love this scene too.
One thing that bothers me: in the middle, are there two candles exactly one
behind the other? The flame seems doubled....

Very beautiful!

However, somehow the flames don't look very warm to me. They're missing a 
slight glow IMHO. The attached image shows the flames with post-processed 
glows, and I think it makes them look more like flames. I'm not sure what 
would be the best way to achieve such glows from inside POV-Ray though.

Yes. I found a whole lot of discussion and examples of sub-surface
scattering on these groups and played until I have something that looked
good.

Yes there are. The candle placement is random and I liked the other
placements too much to play any more with the random seed.

Mayba another media. The flames are a sphere with an object pattern density,
so it shouldn't be too hard
to add a second media to the container, much dimmer with a spherical
density.

I'll give it a try and see howe it looks.
