A mere doodle, playing with refraction.
The innermost ball has ior 1/2, the next 3/2 and so on up.

Placement of the sphere centers:
r = sqrt(N)
theta = sqrt(4*pi*N)

It's a nice doodle mate, no doubt about it, but I'd be intrigued to hear
about the material that has an ior half that of a vacuum. ;)

Nice design. I'd call this almost zazzleable-- maybe if you just added 
something like a specular component to the finish of the spheres,  you'd be 
set.
