Just a post to show how far I've got with this.

Next is to do the road and sidewalk details - at the moment there is nothing 
there :-)

Not quite sure that the curve is correct, but it's just a formula so I can 
always tweak it later.

Also need to align up the start and end sections with the correct bit of 
land at each end.

And some radiosity might make the underneath bit look better.

Fantastic... really close to what I can remember of the Golden Gate (though
the only day I've seen it had lots of coastal fog).
