Although Thurman's golf ball patent looks very much like the algorithm for
making a geodesic sphere, it ends up creating a shape with the wrong number
of faces. The difference in the algorithm is quite subtle, but the outcome
is quite different.
A first-order Buckminster Fuller Icosahedral Geodesic sphere has 80 faces,
but Thurman's algorithm (United States Patent 5562552 Geodesic icosahedral
golf ball dimple pattern) creates a shape with 60 faces.
