The first image was made by lifting a spline from KnotPlot and running
it through Mike Williams' Ropes2.inc file:
http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/pov/rope.htm
I'm still puzzling over getting the twistiness right so that it lines up
at the bottom. Trial and error got me close.
The second is a blob thing made from the 4 edge splines from KnotPlot.
(See the other knotplot spline post above).

From a different knot (obviously.) A sample is now available in PBSF

I have not have had time yet to try out KnotPlot, but your results are
impressive. Very good work!

Very cool stuff! I especially like that twisted thing in the second image.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks! And as Maurice pointed out (in pov.general) and I had forgotten,
KnotPlot uses right-hand coordinates, so you have to scale by <-1,1,1> (or
<1, -1, 1> or <1, 1, -1>), then rotate by 90 degrees to fix it in POVRay.
My 10 year old just loves KnotPlot -- it's that easy to use.
