OK, I need your help. I've spent some time creating this forklift.
However, while I understand the construction of something from the
various 'primatives' I'm not so good on texturing.

What sort of thing should I be looking to do to my forklift to get it to
look more 'real'?

One thing is to put some tread on the tyres .. it looks like a golf
buggy at the moment!

(The forklift is animated and once I work out how to reduce the size of
my AVI I'll post it in PBA .. it take parameters for the lift of the
forks, the angle of the rear wheels and the angle of the forks (they
tilt back just like the real ones)

Thanks for any/all help. I can post the source if anyone is interested.

Cheers!
Rick

Hi
Indeed it looks like a toy :)
Texturing is one way to make it look more real. Some marks and logos, paint
scratches..
An environnement could help giving size clues as well.
A lower point of view could do one part of the trick too.

   Very good modeling!

First I think you need some environment to properly evaluate
reflections. Also, the light is too close to the camera: make it more
"casually" placed respect to the camera.

Yes, little details also add a lot to realism, even the ones that are
barely visible.

LOL! I read that and thought it said "my wife looks like a toy" - which
is something totally different...

I think the rounded edges don't help. If that forklift is actually a
meter or so across, those rounded parts are 15cm or so. Try making them
very much smaller.

Some tread of the tires might help also.

And finally... make it slightly dirty. It's a well-known fact of
computer graphics that dirt makes things look bigger. ;-)

I've changed the camera angle (helps) and I've sampled the color from a
real forklift. However I can't get the light right to get the color
appearing right.

Here's my light source. The lift is about 5u tall.

light_source {
   <0, 0, 0> // light's position (translated below)
   color rgb <1, 1, 1> // light's color
   translate <-30, 30, 30>
}

I've attached the real forklift with the sampled area circled and a
swatch showing the color. I've then applied this as a pigment (without
any other finishings) to the forklift. As you can see, the result is
very dull. What do I need to do to get the color I asked for?

Cheers!

Done.

Done.

Done.

OK, we're looking better. I don't really like having to make it dirty
though :)

Cheers!

I think you need to make the dirt have a *much* smaller scale and then it will
look better :)

Rick,

I think you need to add more details. Where are the hoses to the gas
cylinder and the valve? I have never seen a fork lift without a soda can on
it or a clipboard and all kinds of other small items that will make the
difference. Also, the model needs a warehouse to surround it. The
surroundings will help give it a sense of scale. I do like the work so far
though.

Tim

LOL But don't forklifts always have scraps along the sides where
they are always squeszing past skids and things?

About the treads on the tires, I've seen several forklifts with slicks, solid ruber as
tires. In
that case, you expect those to have nicks and dents in them, and very mate. It was the
case of the
first one that I saw close up in a place where I worked many years ago.
Unless brand new, the paint get scratched, chipped and worn out. Maybe some dents and
scratches on
the hubcaps, and less reflection.
I would expect a step hole a litle behind the front wheels about mid way up the side,
with diamond
plate bottom.
I would reduce the reflection on the gas thank also, I've never saw one so shiny. It
also need
mounting brackets and straps.

Alain
