I had had the code for the pagoda image laying around for a while before
I rendered and posted it last week. I was proud of it, but hadn't been
excited about it in a while.
Short story. The enthusiasm for the picture in this group was
contagious, so I sat down Saturday and gave the whole thing the polish I
think it deserved. Changed the lighting, fixed the background, added a
much needed horizon, rendered with decent settings.
A small resize here to better show the "kitsch, exotic, travel
photography" vibe (as described by Jim Charter). Also a link to a large
(1.5m) render that actually shows details without a detail shot.
Thank you all.

Impressive.
As a demonstration that artistic sense could be externated through sdl.
You have planned it on a paper from beginning or build it directly coding
and testing?
HAve a nice day,
;-)

The lighting looks better, but IMO it still looks as if the contrast could
be higher. I attached an image of what I think it should look like. Of
course my judgement is probably wrong, but I just thought I let you see if
this looked any better or not. What a great model though - has given me
inspiration to go and model something complex now!

Coding and testing. I make many little sketches to figure out some of
the trig, but I can't draw well enough to begin drawing a pagoda.

Yes, mine is not photorealistic lighting. This is more what I was aiming
for:

Thank you for the suggestions.

That horizon line is perfect, gives a "floating" feeling.

The new contrast, background, and light direction are definitely an
improvement. Good job =)

Wow. The first one inspired me to mess around with SDL made meshes, but this
one almost makes me want to give up! (I spent an hour or so making a
beveled box ;)) Adding better lighting to the incredible modelling makes it
art. The horizon is beautiful, it merely suggests land, it does not detract
form the beauty of the structure. Really, really amazing.

There's a reason I've only produced ten or so decent pictures in five
years. :)
Tim Nikias' website has some mesh macros for hand-coding if you don't
want to reinvent the wheel.
