blob man (Message 1 to 10 of 10)

A long time ago, I found somewhere on the internet a poseable human model,
completely made with blobs. I tried to find it again, but I didn't (got 404's
everywhere it should have been), but then I remembered I had it on my harddisk
once, so it had to be on one of my backup-CD's.

Luckily they still seem to be readable :p So I found it, and I updated it a
little: I made an IMHO better head.

I wonder if the original creator of the blob man would mind if I update it
further (I have some more ideas, which may or may not be possible to do, like
muscle flexing and better clothing support) and redistribute it. There doesn't
appear to be a license included with the include file.

Anyway, here's a preview of 'enhancements', and for comparison an image of the
way the head was. I hope you can guess which image is the new version :)

Cute!
I have blobman somewhere too. Never really used it, but I like it. I
remember I had a problem with the hair, though...

The only place I know that version 4.2 is still available for download is:
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.utilities/thread/<3d35eec1@news.povray.org>/
Older versions are available on some of the model sites.

hmm, didn't know it had hair, but as I said in reply to Chris B, I think I
used another blobman :)

Yes it looks like you may have an original blobman.

By version 2 it had hair and version 4.2 also has cloths and both a male and
female model.
The first image attached is Version 2.
The second and third are from Version 4.2.

The last image is what happened when I stuck a head I'd been working on onto
the blobman body.

Your head is an improvement over the original one.

Thanks, but I have to confess I cheated a bit.
The face uses a Mesh and the hair uses sections of a Torus (Lots of them).
So it's not pure Blobs.

Nice (with caveats as mentioned later about mesh's).

How much memory do these all take? I'm trying to model a city and would
like to stick some walking people at a distance all around. However, I'm
pusing 1.5M as it is, so I need something sparce. I had been thinking of
using some low rez mesh models, would the blob people be less RAM?

The Blobman 4 sample scene contains 6 people and showed a 'peak memory used'
of 45MB (rendering in 4 minutes on my machine). I think a lot of that is
down to the type of hair selected, because this represents a large
proportion of the number of objects. If your people will be at a distance
then you can use the simplest type of hair.

Easiest way is to download a copy and spend a few minutes playing around to
see if it does what you want. The zip file isn't very big.

Chris B.
