So, my most recent test results. The hair now have a simple algorithm for
gravity and wind: only the gravity part is calculated realistically, wind is
just a cheat/tweak, but they provide some visually pleasing results, which
is all I'm after.
I've also scripted a nice macro which will take the line and produce a
conical shape along the path of the hair. In the last post, one could see
the obvious drawback of using 2d-meshes for hair: they layered to a solid
wall...
In this image, the drawback of simulating single strands of hair with no
object interaction is visible: hairs disappear behind hairs where it would
be realistic to have it the other way round, on some angles, the results
look somewhat strange...
Ah well. I'm not *simulating* hair, I'm just glueing it onto a surface, so
what would you expect? Actually simulating it would require quite a few more
CPU cycles...
I'll be running a test for memory comparison next, but I'm quite satisfied
with how everything turned out. Now I'll just have to slap it all into
useful code and work on the texturing possibilites... Might still be some
time off till I can release the macros to the public.
Regards,
Tim
PS: Also worked a little on the base model of the furry fellow. Now has two
toes. :-)

It's a walking, hairy bum!! Heh, nice work Tim. I'm following this with
enthusiasm. Keep at it.

Hey, don't be so rude to this cute little guy! He's just a poor small fella
with no arms, eyes or anything! ;-)

Thanks for further motivation. :-)

Nice Tim! Any chance you'll package the macro and release it?

Sure I will! I always do that when the macros aren't trivial and could be
useful to the community. These are based off the Surcoat-Macros which you
can already get from my website, I'll be uploading the Surcoat2Hair-Macros
once they are finalized and have all the planned features (texturing is
still on my to-do list).

Tim

Love the toes. Even as a test bed this little guy is a lot of fun. Can't wait
to see the final hair effects.

Thanks. Tried my best at making them kinda cute. :-)

Yup, agreed. I'm finalizing on his topology, so that I can go ahead and
prepare him for some round-about rigging (Silo doesn't support bones [yet],
but it can put vertices and groups, so with a little tweakage I can do
forward kinematics and then tweak the results for visual artifacts).

I hope to create some diverse possibilities. The hair itself is quite
limited, but I can of course raise the amount and work on the texturing. I
also want to experiment with modifying the surface-normals before sending
them to the macro to create something like hairstyles or such.
Actually doing different hair (e.g. curly one or such) will probably only be
prepared in a way that it can be added later on, but I'll probably leave it
at the current hair. What I want to add though is simulated hair using
springs, at least in way to have hair/body/object interaction to a limited
extent... Maybe that'll be an add-on to the add-on though...
Regards,
Tim
