But the checkered plane seems to be a sphere, isn't it? :)

I think so. The small circle in the center and the curved horizon are the main clues.

Yes, that's right. I liked that better than a simple plane. I could have
scaled the checker pattern so that the circle in the center did not appear,
but I thought it added a nice focal point to the image.
