So girls and guys, this is it! The final image.

I've added a door and a small top window to the barn (even though the photo
reference doesn't have that) to add some roughly sketched detail to the
front. The color was subdued and made more brownish to fit within the
color-palette of the rest of the image. This way, it doesn't stick out
anymore and as such works fine for the background.

The fences got a little less "zigzagness" and some snow ontop (not made with
the Surcoat-Macros, but just placed on the top-vertices of the beams, which
are made of script-generated meshes). The far fence also has snow on top,
but the front side is actually due to a slope-map, not visible on the fence
in the foreground cause we're looking at them from the wrong side.

Some grass near the forest border, but didn't look too good near the main
tree, so I left it at that.

Clouds a little less dense, along with the moon receiving less light and
thus its less bright.

I forgot to raise the res on the foreground heightfield, a minor issue for
the final render of course. :-)

Comments and suggestions are appreciated, I want to see how well it is as it
is and if I can leave it at that.

IMHO, everything fits together nicely now, it isn't 100% photorealistic, but
it being the first *real* snowscene with a forest and all, I think I'm
satisfied with what I've achieved. I'll ponder the latest comments and
suggestions, maybe make the last tweaks, and will then set my PC on a
several day journey to render this image for print.

Regards,
Tim

That is an improvement!
I like the way the colors harmonize now.
And the placement of the birdhouse and barn with branch on axis is
satifying.
The barn echoes the birdhouse and makes a story which goes beyond bird and
cat.
The wilds on the left, the domestic on the right and the tension between
them works well.
The moon has become superfluous - its a detail that doesn't hurt and doesn't
help.
Its been a pleasure observing the creative process.
Well done.

Hope not. The ground normals are f+++ed. See around the cat and tree.
Nice scene though.

Did you intentionally leave out the cat's foot prints? I thought they were
a nice touch.

The barn looks much better. Looks like a couple of probs are around the
base of the tree and the cat, though.

As mentioned in my original post: the res for the foreground heightfield was
missed and kept at preview-resolution, which is one vertex per POV-Unit. If
you look at the former image, that one had 15 per unit, the final will have
probably 25 or so.

Mentioned that in the text accompanying the post ;-) : the resolution for
the foreground heightfield was missed and kept at preview res, which is one
vertex per POV unit. Final will of course have something closer to 30 or so,
the last update had 15.

Thank you!

Thanks for all the feedback on various details, seems like I really can call
it a wrap. :-)

Well, otherwise it wouldn't have been to visible, and who knows, maybe the
farmer is just inside, searching his cat? :-)

Nah, special gifts always stay unique... :-)

Nope, lost due to too low resolution. They'll be back in the final. Note
that the foreground heightfield is based upon a function which I scripted so
that I can just say: "make footprint there, there, and there, add some snow
there...". Later on, I decide the resolution for the heightfield. I keep it
low for fast previews (e.g. when testing the sky, or the barn in the
background), but put it higher on detailed runs. I forgot to set it higher
on this one.
