Stumbled upon this whilst working on a revamped version of my IRTC entry.
The transparent edge of the disc just cuts away the remaining scenery behind
it. Scene-File in in p.b.s-f, thread in p.b.g.

The "whitish thing" is half a disc, with no special ior (so it has the
default "ior 1"). The blue screen is refractive, but that's it. Dependant on
ior and camera position, I can see the red plane beneath the disc or not.
This originally occured with a heightfield instead of the red plane.
