Brought up from the depths of the mediterranean, where it has presumably 
laid decomposing for millenia..... whatever.

I'm working on a corrosion texture.. I need to figure out how to get it 
'flakey'.

Looking good.  For flakiness, I've used agate and/or crackle with standard
color_maps and appropriate scaling.

Is the stone texture a procedural?

Do you have a link to a sample result you've achieved with this?
