Here's a test of some bits of wood I'm working on for my povcomp scene. I'm
pretty pleased with how it looks, though I'm regretting my decision to go with
pure isosurfaces 'cause this image took 15 hours to render!

Your deck is sadly in need of repair! :)

This looks like some 2x4s that have been floating in the ocean for a couple 
of years.

I think if you added some fine structure, in terms of long thin streakiness, 
in the pigment, that I would have a hard time telling that this wasn't real, 
especially if that was in a cylindrical pattern.
