Does the knight look more like a whitetail doe, or a shiny dog? I fear
my dream of being a professional chess modeler is less than guaranteed....

It looks like a horse without legs... Otherwise I think you could graduate.

I like the texture of the chess board. Is it possible to view the source ?
Thanks

I do not recall does or dogs being part of a chess game, so I
think it is clear from the context. In fact all pieces have more
or less a rotation symmetry except for the knight. So in practice
the most asymmetric piece is recognized as the knight. If it looks
vaguely animalistic that is a bonus.
Is this the white or the black set of pieces?
And what would the other look like?
I am somewhat surprised by the texture of the top of the
rook, I expected here the metalic finish.

Well, from a chess point of view it looks like a horse to me. Nice
looking chess set.
From a farmboy's point of view though it looks like a terrier mix. The
positioning of the ears and eyes is wrong; a horses' eyes are more on
the side of the head while the ears are on top. If you draw a line from
the base of a horses' ear continuing through the eye it ends somewhere
under the jaw, yours ends at the top of the nose.
RG - saddle up the terriers boys, we move out at dawn

In addition to Gonzo's comments, the end of a horse's muzzle is a bit
wider than the middle, flairing out around the nostrils and lips, which
AFAIK no dog or deer actually does. A very slight increase there might
make a surprisingly strong difference.

You see the same texture on the top of the knight (maybe a reflection),
the rims around the pawn, and the bases of the pieces, don't look like
reflections. Could be a slope_map with that texture for horizontal parts.
There is some untidy facing on the pawn's head, maybe an option to chop
off that part and replace it by a sphere.

I gave up. Appears I need a little more practice with organic modeling.
I assume it's obvious someone else made this model.

Hum, I like it! It has a spooky look
about it.
Best,

But your horse looks more like a chessman, just as it should!
Besides I like the light & textures of your rendering.
