a crude, fast render.
Two isosurfaces: (1) rocks with controlled inclination of bedding planes and
erosion columns); (2) rippled sand dunes.
Saguaro cactus comes from Taschen's 500 3D Objects, volume 2 (3ds model),
imported in Wings3D, slightly modified and exported as mesh2.
No antialiasing, no radiosity, no media, only a groundfog.
Of course: comments and criticisms welcome!!

Looks very realisitic, especially the banding on the rocks near the camera.
Very nice!

Thank you!
The banding is an approximation of fossilized ripples. It is not entirely
realistic, but I put it there as a kind of ancient echo with the dune field
behind.
Just for the record: the ripples and the cracks in the foreground are
obtained by an averaged texture (ripples/crackles)

It's nice, but it's really grainy. Did you use antialiasing?

In the next couple of weeks, if I can get anywhere near what you've
done, I might give the comp a go.
Nice! Room for improvement, but nice. Looking forward to the final
image.

The sand laying in hollows or so it appears is interesting. The geology
looks pretty fierce. Definitely says "Desert" though.

High!
I think the sand looks too grainy... as if you used crand! And somehow I
remember saguaro cacti being somewhat greener... the rocks are quite
good! Wish I had already achieved that masterly control over
isosurfaces... instead, I'm still at the very beginning with them! It's
really time for me to work through Christoph's German isosurface
tutorial published in c't 20/2003...
By the way, those Taschen 3D objects collections are really interesting!
About two months ago, I saw them in a local arts bookshop, and almost
bought at least the first volume... but first I need a larger harddisk
and a DVD writer (also for my ever-growing archive of postings and
pictures from THIS very group!), so I had to refrain...

No AA, as I said. Just a quick, dirty render to give an idea of the scene.
With AA, it becomes much better, and with radiosity on top (quite slow!), it
is almost perfect ;-]
