How do the players know whether that's a 6 or a 9?

It's a nine. It's striped, rather than solid.
But usually either the six or the nine or both has a little bar
underneath, to tell you which way is up.

Hmm... Maybe a bit more diffuse in the finish. Also, I have seen with
most pool sets the white portions of the balls are not truely white, but
more of an ivory color.

I looked at some images of pool balls online and the "floor" is
definately curved. I must admit that my "floor" is not perfect though,
but neither is the number 1, so I will be changing those tomorrow
when I finaly have a day off.

I presume this is modelled on the Pixar image "1984" from that year... with
HRDI mapping and motion blur, 20 years ago!

Correct you are ofcourse, it is one of the color-plates in
"Computer Graphics - Principles and Practice 2nd Edition (in C)"
and I have always liked that picture. Not sure if I will do a motion
blur version though.
