Here's an improvement to the milk image:
It only took about a day and a half to render. Media is slow ;)

Impressively real... (Not sure about the bright front edge of the milk
though.) Would perhaps look better if the floor plane wasn't infinite...
I don't know... (Also, the checkers being that size give a slightly
bizzare impression of scale - like the glass is 20 feet tall or
something. ;-))

Hmm.. Yeah, I should adjust the size of the checkers. Or just flat out
use another pattern.
As for the floor being infinite ... it should be cut off by another wall
behind the camera. If you look at the output there are 6 infinite
objects... 6 planes forming a box. I'm thinking picnic table plaid may
be a good option here for the floor surface. I don't like the
frappuchino colored walls either. Oh, the ways you change your mind when
a long render is taking place.
I'm wondering of the meniscus should be thickened a little for the milk
or that my density is still off. Hmm.
Back to the drawing board.
Thanks for the comments ;)

the milk itself looks a lot better. the reflections on the glass are pretty
distracting though. i would do something like reflection {0.05, 0.2} or
less. what are these settings?

yeah, I think I have it at 0.1,1.0. I'm running another render at the
moment, with a changed floor and wall texture. I might try your
suggestion on the reflection, though... The image takes a day and a half
to render becuase of the media.
I have to wonder if POVRay used the photon mapping technique described
by the site linked to by a reply to my previous post, if there would be
a significant speedup.
