Thanks for the great suggestions. As always, many thoughtful ideas and
comments. I did manage to work in the checkered plane in this version; how
could I have been so neglectful the first time??? :-)

I think it's very helpful to render this thing before starting construction
because I can look at different configurations and imagine which would be
most comfortable to use. When (if?) I complete this project I'll post a
photo of the actual device, if anyone's interested.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the render.. but wouldn't 
you be better off making something with a little roundness to the 
corners? I mean, unless you relly WANT those edges there...

I'll use a router to round off the edges of the actual wooden box. But for
the render, it was too time-consuming to round the edges off. The tricky
part is that the top of the box is angled (CSG intersection between a box
and a plane), so I couldn't just use "Round_Box_Union" from shapes.inc.
