Hi all,
This is my first "published" POV-Ray image. As such, although I consider
it finished I'm looking for comments and pointers on how I could do
things better next time, on anything that comes to mind - colour,
composition, subject matter, whatever. I'm not much of a graphic artist,
so the more help the better. :)
This image was inspired by the images that Shay has published to this
newsgroup recently. I was playing around trying to get the same "drawn
in ink" look and it just grew from there. I think I've succeeded to a
certain degree, although the JPEG compression spoils it slightly but I
wasn't sure what file types or size is considered polite on this
newsgroup and everyone else seems to use JPEG.
I understand that the standard first post image is a CSOCP, but to make
that interesting one has to be better at texturing than I am at present;
pointers to any good tutorials on making realistic textures gratefully
accepted.
Tim.

very cool. you know you could throw a chrome sphere in there someplace, on
one of the non-spire blocks or on top of the spires, and we would buy it as
a CSOCS :)

Very neat. How about a desktop-sized PNG? :-)

Wild. Have either you or Shay released the technique?

Cool. Thanks for saying so.

There are a few things you could try.
Adjust the radii of the cylinders to make up for camera viewing angle.
That way, despite the perspective of the camera, all of the lines will
appear to be of the same width.
In order to punch out the blocks, try using four light sources. One
point light for your shadows, and one shadowless, dim, parallel light
from each of the y, -z, and -x directions. Give each light a different
brightness to fake the illumination from your point light source. This
will give the hand-drawn cube look (dark side, medium side, light side)
to each cube, even those in shadow.

I tried to do this in the previous version; my algorithm wasn't quite
correct. I think I've fixed it now, and it looks better allthough not
quite perfect.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done that, although it's not overly
apparent in the image because of the reflection.
To save filling up the newsgroup server, and to satisfy the requests for
desktop-sized PNGs, you can get the final version here:

Give's a refreshing look to things around here. Clever and enjoyable.
Having some slight doubts about the reflectivity in the current image.
I don't mean doubts about it's optical accuracy, a mean doubts about
what it really adds to the image.
( Between you and me. I never did the chrome sphere thing )

Except you need to make the file readable by the web server. :-)

Whoops. Minor server misconfiguration. Try again now.
