So, another latest render. One thing up ahead: the texture for the floor got
messed up, I commented the wrong section out. Now the texture fades from
non-reflecting red granite to reflecting pure white...

I'm unsure if the columns will get a texture of their own or stay reflective
and white, as I like the simplicity. Maybe a subtle one. I'm also planning
on adding some ground fog to brighten the horizon and the lower clouds
somewhat, but not much. Just a subtle gradient for the horizon.

I'm pretty much closing in on the final form. Comments, as always, welcome,
though I doubt that I'll get much response now that this is the third
version I post...

Regards,
Tim

It looks super to me, just the way that it is.

Wow, this is getting way too cool...

The focus now seems to be firmly back on the rose, although the sky
still looks awesome. I love the patches of light and shade on the floor
- and the texture looks lovely.

...and the stalk no longer looks like a jelly bean ;-)

Keep up the good work!

So, thanks for all the suggestions and comments, but now the image has a
wrap and is considered done. I'm rendering it now at 3200x2400, roughly
100dpcm ("dots per centimeter", that's not an "official" abbreviation I
suppose, but I didn't want to convert from inches to cm :-).

That will be sufficient for the color-laser-printer I'll be using to make a
small Poster out of it. This image is the preview I rendered with less
media-intervals to check if all switches and values were set correctly
before I fire the final render, so the horizontal bands in the clouds are
due to 25 intervals instead of 75 for the final. The preview of 512x384, no
AA, rendered at 15 minutes on 2.4Ghz, 768 MB RAM, Win2000.

Anyways, before the bids for source etc begin: like "Gerberas", this image
is supposed to be a unique item, and though it'll get a "Making Of" on my
site, I won't upload the source or a very large image for desktops or prints
for just that uniqueness reason. I will, however, provide details on how
certain effects were achieved in the "Making of", you'll just have to write
the code yourself. :-)

Kind regards, thanks for all the help on this one,
Tim

15 minutes *without* AA? :-| Brimey... that's devoted! LOL.

Good luck with it! *thumbs up* Can't wait to see how long the finished
one takes... ;-)

The finished one required 1 day, 2 hours,52 minutes and 17 seconds non-stop
rendering, but I have been doing some other stuff along as well, so it might
have been a few hours shorter if I hadn't played Mafia. Add another 2 hours
for a change, I've colored the thorns to gradient from stem-green towards a
brown tip. A little more diversity in a pic can't harm, right?

The final image was rendered at 3200x2400, with Antialiasing Method 2,
Recursive Level 2. If I'd rendered a smaller pic, e.g. just for a wallpaper,
I'd use higher recursion on the antialiasing, but since the pixels are
barely visible on the print later on, level 2 suffices. Filesize is 22mb,
Bitmap. It says in the statistics from the rerun for that changed section,
that a max memory peak was a 66mb. Does that change significantly if I'd
render the entire image at once?

I've also noted that 75 intervals wasn't really enough, the "layers" of
intervals are still visible. Won't be obvious on a print though, just in
close-up. I'll have to fiddle some more with media to see if the randomness
of some meda can't be exploited to a degree to make this layering disappear
whilst achieving good results.

I've posted a close-up on the clouds to explain what I mean in a different
thread.

Regards,
Tim

So, today I've given my girlfriend the image as a present, nicely framed and
signed. For the last two weeks, I've been telling her that I don't know what
to give her, so she was quiet stumped to actually get something, and then to
see what it was. She knows how long some of my images can take to make and
to render.

Her first look wasn't really reassuring, as she thought that the edgy-rose
had some deeper meaning (which it didn't, it was meant to be a ceramic/metal
rose, also to hide the fact that in order to create a realistic rose, I
should have begun like a year ago or so). We had been going through some
troubled times lately and she thought the edgy-rose was to say that
everything has its edges.

Anyways, after that initial hump and explaining that there was no "deeper"
meaning like *that* (aside that a rose is the flower of love) she was glad
and really happy to have her own image. As I anticipated, she loved the
clouds and the columns, but she also noticed that the rose is really big in
comparison to the background... Something to keep in mind for the next time.

Anyways, thanks to all you guys giving suggestions and comments and such, I
surely wouldn't have achieved as much in the short time without your
feedback.

Regards,
Tim

Hehehe - once made an image with Pov for a girl too - she liked it as well!

PovRay as a relationship enhancer? Yet another great use for a great
program... ;)

:) same here! Mine was 12 hearts rendered in different styles, though on the
last one I got a bit carried away and did it all in dark green media, she didn't
like that bit so much! Naturally that one's my favourite:

It has so many uses: pictures, animations, CPU benchmarks, dating services...
