Subject: A Rose (WIP - Update)

So, this is where I've come these last days. Had to spend quiet some time at
work, preparing the movie "Day after Tomorrow" to show in our theatre. Few
know that the movie gets shipped in several parts, which have to be cut and
glued together...

Anyways, this gave the opportunity to do this 5 hour render (at 1024x768).
There are some aliasing artifacts due to the two lines of columns, even
though I'm using the adaptive antialiasing method 2. Perhaps I'll have to
modify the distribution a little to avoid too many columns lining up on a
single column of pixels...

I still want to add some thorns and a leaf or two to the Rose, and I'm
wondering if I should put something in the sky. I do like the "open air"
feeling this has though.

I'm not too sure if Radiosity is actually worth it in this image, I'll have
to do a few tests with three-point lighting or such to see if I can improve
the rendertime. I'd need to raytrace it somewhat larger to print it, and
time is getting short...

Actually, I think this looks pretty damn good.
The open sky is good but I would turn the camera a tad downward to make the
rose more in the center of the page and do something with the floor. Not
too much though.

if you like the "open air" feeling i would give image more depth. for
example with an vulcano in background. or a castle on an island with
same pillow theme.
personally i would lift up camera, put the rose on a socket and create
a sunset with a nice orange sun on horizon. (if i would know how to
create a sun...)

Simply awesome.  It has a cartoon-like appearance that I find very
appealing.  Technically, you have worked wonders with the rose petals.  Most

Thanks, and after fiddling with it, I tend to agree on the camera angle. For
now, I've just added a texture to the floor, I'm as of yet unsure if I'll
add more detail to it, or leave it as it is.

Hm, interesting thoughts. But I rather wanted to focus on the Rose, rather
than create some detailed background. The current backdrop provides enough
detail to look nice and enhance the background, but doesn't call for
attention. Additionally, I don't have much time left, and I'd rather have
something realistic renderingwise, than actual realism in the scene.

I've tried that. Now that I'm onto a more sunset setting, radiosity adds
that touch of color which is needed for realism. I was able to lower the
level of detail on the radiosity though with using a saving/loading step
which I've also described on my webpage.

Thanks for the praise. I'm glad the rose did go so well with the first
attempt. This way, I can focus on the scene in its entirety and experiment
with other stuff, rather than fiddle with the rose until it seems like one,
but then have no time for the remaining part of the image...

Make the pilars a slight pink colour! and post process to get rid of the
slight grey quality of the image
I to feel it's worth thinking about raising the camera.

I really like where this is going. I'd be delighted if MY partner 
presented me with something like that. :-)

The sky is nice. The pillars are good too - interesting without being 
attention-stealing. And of course, the rose. I do like that slightly 
dark red colour. (Oddly, the stem looks like a giant jelly bean - must 
be the angle or something, becuase it didn't before. LOL!)

Keep up the good work - and let us all know if she actually LIKES it. ;-)

in my thoughts a background would give more depth to image. it could
have less details maybe added with some fog.
of course focus should lay on your rose.
but only my thoughts.

question: will the image get a more realistic or more comic touch?
for me it looked like second one.
