On my screen it's way too dark. I can make out the center orange of the
image and the reflections but that's about it

On my LCD screen, i'd say that it's just very high contrast. Shadowed areas
are black but the spheres show up fine. I like the effect. The sphere
textures could use some more work.

Looks fine to me (of course, gamma 1.8 doesn't hurt). There's a lot of 
contrast, but I can see the spheres pretty clearly.
