My first thought: How does this dragon fly without the wings breaking
off? Or is it made of some extra-stable material? Maybe you could
improve something there.

I suggest both. They complement each other very well (Wings3D for
polygon/subsurface modelling, and Blender for other modelling techniques,
animation and even rendering).

   Well, I haven't tried Blender much, but I would say explore Wings
for all it's worth, for sure.

   At the end, when you've completed everything, it's a nice
experience.

I'm all for Wings3D - great modeller - but Blender has an awfully cluttered
interface, just like most other 3D applications...
