Very cool, I think you should try a photographic 3 lights system on this
kind of subject, it should work very well (image attached).

I did try that but lost patience with it after 4 hours. When I'm back on my
regular machine, such things should not be so much of a problem.

It's a way lighting subjects in photography that can be used in 3D too,
it seems that it's more known as three points lighting.
