Following what seems to be a trend I'm also trying to get
to grips with radiosity.
It would be disingenious of me not to point out that the
furthest backdrop of trees behind the far bank and reflected
in the lake *is* a photo. Other than that it's all my own
macros, textures and csg, uses Radiosity_OutdoorLQ and no
conventional lighting.
I'm not perfectly happy with it but I'm losing objectivity
so please feel free to criticize.

Thanks!
I used a photo from a book for reference, so again I can't claim
originality in the set design. I can however heartily recommend
the book for anyone wanting inspiration on all things Japanese:
"japanese detail: architecture" by Sadao Hibi, ISBN: 0811836754
Also after a quick image search it turns out that this particular
kotoji is quite famous in Japan, it's in the Kenrokuen Park,
Kanazawa, Ishikawa. I hope I'm not doing it a dis-service.

Awesome CSG. I love all of the rounded corners. Clean clean clean.
As far as the radiosity, looks a bit washed out.

Thanks, that was the CSG bevelling exercize from hell.

I'm not sure what to do about that, the lantern is ambient 0 diffuse 1.
In fact I'm not even sure what you men by "washed out".
Any suggestions?

Another thing I noticed almost as soon as I posted is that
the AA settings are way too low for the water (just +A0.3),
I'm experimenting with +A0.1 +AM2 +R4 etc.

Low contrast. This picture http://tinyurl.com/3gs4e is similar to yours,
but the darker parts are darker and the lighter parts lighter.
| Any suggestions?
Sorry, not an area of knowledge for me.

Absolutely gorgeous. I agree with everything said about the smoothness
of the CSG. Also, the front leaves. They are your own macro? I love
their look. It's perfect for this image.

Thanks.
I'm happy enough with the CSG for the lantern,
(though I might try taking out some random chunks
to simulate wear and tear), but everything else
is still a WIP, though I'm not sure where to go
from here yet.

For the leaves I used the gimp to make 3 variant toned
png transparencies of a photo of a leaf and an edge-detect
on the same photo to create a bump-map. Then I used rotated
copies of those to texture a simple mesh2.
I've attached jpg thumbnails to illustrate.
