I'm basing this on a set of crude plans I've gotten ahold of. I've got side
profiles of the frame and the engine+tender, but no frontend shots so I'm
having to guess a bit at widths. I also have a table of manufs. figures for
the locomotive and combining these with the plan image, using gimps' ruler
tool I've been able to get decent dimensions on most things. Attached find
a render of what I've got so far. Tons not modeled, but it should be enough
to be interesting... (hopefully..). Textures are very much stand-ins at
this point. I've also attached the one photo I have of this locomotive. I
didn't try to match angles on the shots[1], but they are pretty close.

[1] Okay, I lied. I did mirror-image the render to be a bit closer to the
photo.

Sounds like a very ambitious project, but the end result should be worth it!
After modeling that gun, which I thought would be a relatively short
project, I contemplated doing a steam locomotive for the IRTC. I then
realized how much more work and how many years I would spend doing it...
hehe. Speaking of mirroring the image, I had to do that to my last post
because I somehow screwed up my camera angle vectors. Anyway, I'm looking
for to seeing the end result.

Here's an image showing the progress I've made today.
Changes since the first preview:
(*) Wheels have hubs and axles
(*) Front truck has the platform and bracing poles
(*) Structure supporting the boiler and cab on the frame (I'm totally
guessing on this. What I'm doing seems to look okay and should work
structually, but the plans I have don't show the connection, and I'm just
guessing...
(*) Cylinder heads are (more) complete.
This evening I want to do the various smokestakes, bells, domes, etc on the
boiler.

I love it when I see projects that are a huge challenge. Great start!!!
