Looks like a shiny reflexive sphere on a radius checkered plane. So I
guess it's conformant with the "sphere on checker board first post" rule.

Yet another example of how technical merit does not equate to artistic
merit. Even though it is simple, it has a LOT of impact. I like it!!!

I am sorry to disappoint You, but there is no sphere involved ;)
The picture is made of hollow cylinders which are filled with blue
colored, light emitting media. (Actually, the blue contains a little bit
of red and green which produces the white spot in the center).
