Hi,

Inspired by the recent SSS posts, and frustrated by my abilities to totally control
(or even
understand) the method posted by Samuel Benge, I decided to have a go at SSS using
media. I
think it worked rather well.

Very nice !
What I remember from my own subsurface scattering tests with media was that
edges of the object were too much transparent and look odd (not dense enough
media maybe, or wrong pigment/finish for the surface).

i hear ya ... i tried it for the same reasons on the jsde buddha
and really like the effect except for all of the artifacts.
i wonder if a closer render of yours would show them as well?
and ... what can be done to reduce the number of artifacts?
except for them, i found i had much more control.

I dont know if you did this but I have found that adding an ior other 
than 1 solves the problem of transparent edges.

Wow. This rocks!

I once had a problem using Media SSS where the interior of the object 
was too much visible if it wasn't solid (e.g. holes in a cheese). You 
could see those holes, even if the rest of the cheese was opaque as it 
should be. Don't know if my media or my texture was wrong, though. My I 
take a look at your source? Please :)

Yeah, I'll post the relevant material in this thread very soon. There's nothing
magical about
it though, just a case of balancing the thickness of the media to the absorption and
IOR.
