Looking for ideas: I think I've got a good start, but I'm not sure what
kind of context to put the thing in. Comments or ideas?

Try bringing the camera closer to the arches and widening the field of view.

I think it needs some sense of scale. I was thinking a much larger object,
like your "arches of spheres," only bigger, stretching up over the scene.
You could use focal blur (with caution) to establish distance and such.

It reminds me of the altars from the game Sacrifice. How about putting
an altar in the middle, where the red beam comes from, or putting the
whole thing in a more natural environment?

Bear in mind though, that adding focal blur usually makes a scene look
smaller. When using a camera, noticable focal blur only occurs when the
camera is focused at something which is close to the camera.
