I ahve never been happy with my use of Bezier Patches for sales on this
project. So, I have given the MechSim feature from MegaPov a try. The large
sail in the center of the image was created using MechSim and SDL...without
UV mapping. While it still needs plenty of work, I am pleased with the
results so far. I welcome your feedback and suggestions for improvements.

The flag was made with the cloth sim feature also found in Megapatch using
UV mapping.

Wow great!
so you got bezier patches for sale? lol what's the price?
No sorry just kidding ;-)
I understand why tou are not happy with bezier: you mechsim sail is vry
realistic, it looks like a heavy cloth sail in a light breeze
while bezier sail looks like an elastic cloth light sail.
The flag is great too.
you are doing a long but impressive job with this boat!
Now you want suggestion: If your ship sails following wind as the flag
shows, is it normal that the Royal sail is hauled taut this way?.
I never skipped that sort of rig but it seems to me that is should be
released (don't know the right word)

Er... Sail! I have never won any awards for my typing or spelling!

Thank you very much for your comments. Here is where my ignorance shows
through. I have never sailed & this shows. Let me see if I have this right.
The flag and the large topsail show the wind blowing from aft while the
Spanker sail (the one the flag is attached to) is rigged fore and aft.
Should this sail be rotated so that it is pointing abeam of the ship? Say
rotate it 45 or 60 degrees to port?

oooh, I'm really liking this!

At the risk of pointing out what is probably obvious to you, here are my
suggestions.
Technical - I don't see any braces, sheets or lifts. On the sail (which is
GREAT) I'm wanting to see chafe marks, esp. where it can rub up against the
stays. Also, are there any staysails rigged on this thing? If so (and
not raised) there should be a halyard flopping around with the stays.

Artistic - I almost want to ask if the direct sunlight should be a little
more yellow - is the sun angle low enough the justify it? It would go well
with the spot of red provided by the flag. And, now that you've done so
much work on the sail geometry, consider a translucent "texture" for your
final render. If you do this, it will free the sails from being earthbound
and really make them fly!

I'd rotate it about 60 degrees yes. but still not sure how this king of
rigging is exploited

I believe you are referring to the spanker sail? (The sail with the flag
attached to it?) If so, I agree with what you have pointed out. The sail
does indeed need to be rotated so that it realistically catches the wind. I
will make this simple change right away. I believe I should rotate it to
port.

Thanks for your generpous comments and tip.

I agree that all of these details are needed and they are present ont he
plans I am following. The chafe marks will require some thinking on my part
as I do not want to use UV mapping if I can avoid it (Point of pride).

I will make changes to the sun light as I am currently using white. I seem
to remember a thread around here giving rgb values for sunlight. I'll
search for that one.

I'm not sure that old canvas sails were translucent like modern sail cloth.
Does anybody know? I would make this change if I can confirm that they were
indeed translucent.

All of your comments are helpful and encouraging. Thanks for taking the time
to push me along in the right direction.

Tim
