Here's an update on the relief for the cathedral. This won't get more
detailed, I'll do some post processing to sharpen the contours in the
final image.
I'm moving next week, and will only bring my own linux box with me,
therefore I'll have to finish the relief very soon. Is this good enough,
and should I add the rest of the figures? Or should I face the fact that
this does not hold the exceptional standards like the rest of the image,
and scrap it?

If it doesn't stand up to the standards of the rest of the image, is it
worth trying to find an original relief picture on the internet that can be
converted to a heightfield?

Thanks :)

Sure, we discussed this method a while back
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/31517/
Basically you have to make a gradient texture (black to white from back
to front) which fits your model, then do a orthographic shot of it and
use the resulting image as a height_field.

Someone found some large resolution images, but they were shot in
frog-perspective, from below the relief, it's impossible to use it as a
good heightfield.
If we had a image which was shot straight at the catherdal, that might
be used as a image map, but it would need special lighting conditions to
do a shot which could be used as a good heightfield. Please correct me
If I'm totally off course here, though.

No, I see exactly what you mean. Though in theory it would be possible to
generate a height-map given a photo and an good knowledge of the lighting
conditions and reflective properties of the stone, it would be nearly
impossible to get it right without, as you say, exact control over the
lighting. There are a _few_ laser scans of carvings and sculptures available
on the web, which would give you the information you need, but if you're
looking for a specific relief... good luck :)
