Well, obviously, it is a POV-Ray image ...
I was playing around with lighting this evening, trying to think
of how to make light "work" and blend into a scene appropriately.
The immediate flaws that come to mind are the specular
highlights and the regularity of the focal blur pattern.
I believe I can fix the focal blur using MLPOV, though.
Any comments, suggestions?

I see mostly darkness. :o) Are you sure, you weren't inspired by the
recent power outrage?

I'd bet for a POV image. The lighting seems photorealistic but the focal
blur has this special povray look, in this case the field depth seems
to be artificially narrow.
I personally have troubles using focal blur, I never manage to have the
settings I want. It seems that the focus point and the field depth can't
be set separately. If anyone has a good focus blur tutorial ... :-)
Apart from that, the image is a bit dark, I like it though,

Yes, I agree that it is rather dark for me here too, but I didn't notice
that until I tilted the top of my notebook's LCD display away a little.
Looked perfect before due to the overbrightening effect the wrong viewing
angle can cause, and yet this still has a photorealism quality. If I
continue to tilt this LCD back that bluish globe turns black and blends
entirely into the background.
You're right, Aaron, it does need something to replace those artificial
specular highlights. Reflection won't do it though, I don't believe, unless
maybe you use high color numbers on a light's look_like object. Not sure
without rendering a similar thing myself.
I like this image despite any shortcomings. Simple, yet eye-catching.

Well. :)
It is supposed to be a night photo, but let me check my gamma
settings to make sure that I'm rendering it the right way.

For those whose monitor settings are such that you can see what is going on,
I have put a large-format, 24-bit PNG file here:
http://www.spondaeus.com/people/agillies/images/three.png
It is about 475k.

First add dirt. Smuges on the sphere and lint or somthing on the ground.
Increase the area that is in focus. Add something in background. Even a
night shot will have somthing. The sky at night is not black. More of a real
dark blue.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that, it's my new Windows wallpaper. Helps to see what amount of
tilt to use for my notebook LCD.
:-)
Just now noticed a tiny reddish bump on the ground at front and right of the
object. Possibly a very blurry bluish one further away, or closer to the
camera along the same line from the object.

What sort of pigment are you using for the floor in
this image?
