Here is an updated version of my bowl of marbles.

I tried radiosity, but it didn't look good at all.  I tried photons,
but there were too many bright spots.  This is what I was left with.

It didn't come out as I envisioned it.

Suggestions?  Comments?

Well, without photons or other methods, you should at least have used
caustics on the marbles.  Other than that, it is a very nice image.

   The marbles 'seem' to be very close to me - perhaps different
colours?

  The wood. Have you got some magnification through one or two of the
marbles here? On the far side of the bowl, the grain looks bigger than
the opposite side...  Can't quite work it out.
