Why's it been so quiet here for the last couple of days? It makes it look like
I'm posting too much! ;)

Changes in this version:
1/ I've shifted the focal point further back, which has made the closest points
on the fractal look slightly softer (not sure if I like that), but on the
up-side has made the seagull much more visible, and shown more detail in the
clouds. Also I'm using more blur samples which has help lose a lot of the
noisiness.
2/ I've made the water less noisey in the distance, so it blends better with the
sky and gives a nice reflection to the mountains.
3/ There's a flock of birds. Well they looked like birds until I switched the
blur on, now they look like flying spots. It's how they would look at that
distance, but I'm not sure I like it. What do you think?
4/ Trees! A sapling and a small bush have taken root on the fractal. I like the
bush, I'm as yet undecided about the tree. Both were made with PovTree and
TomTree, which is the first time I've tried using povtree and I'm -so- impressed
with it!
5/ In response to Shay's comment I tried various positions of the fractal, and
eventually settled on this. It's slightly bigger in the frame than in v4, and I
think it looks better though I'm sure Shay will still think it's too far to the
side! :)

Next: I plan on adding fish, trying makecloud, and then seeing how it looks if I
put the deckchair back.

What do you think? Better? Worse? Anything else I should add?

Your comments have pretty much built all of this image so far, so I'm open to
more ideas :)

Cheers,

Totally amazing. The right side of the image may be a bit empty though,
splash some boat there. :) Or move those objects (seagull, flock, distant
island) closer to balance things out. Or might the julia be really too far
to the side? :) Still, it's amazing, great work.

I agree. :)

I disagree. I think the image is nicely balanced and I think more
objects would clutter it up.

Considering the size of the flowers and the grass the gull further away must
be HUGE, and maybe the stone (sandstone) seems to reflect too much light and
the dark side. It looks almost ambient!

...so much criticism for a good pic...!

Well those flowers are just meant to be small daisies. But I just did a test
render with the gull hovering over the flowers, and discovered it was indeed a
little too large. I've reduced it by 20% and now it looks right to me. Here's a
picture of it flying over the flowers (no grass in this test render), so you can
see what size it now is. If you still think it's too big then just pretend it's
an albatross ;)

I balanced the lighting to give nice colours and light/dark contrast. There's no
ambient light in the scene, but there's also no shadows so all dark areas are
illuminated using a few lights pretending to be radiosity from the sky. I like
the brightness of the shadows on the rocks, it makes it look like the water is
reflecting light from the sky. Plus I tried it with darker sky lights and the
grass looks much worse because it all flattens out to one shade of green in the
shadows.

Thank you :) criticism is always welcome.

I love it !!

Just two little things:
- The tree implantation seems a bit strange, probably because it takes
root in a dark place, but I can't tell exactly.
- At first impression, the flock of birds seems to be at mountain
distance, which would make the birds very big indeed. But after that I
thought that sometimes reality also gives this kind of illusions, so I'm
not sure there would be something to do about it.

Thanks for the image,

JC

It does draw rather a lot of attention to itself just there, I also tried it
tucked behind the far side of the island, so it's peeking round the corner. It
looked more natural there but it meant that all the main eye-catching features
(the bush, segaull, tree, and the julia itself) were in a line across the middle
of the image which just wasn't interesting enough. I've put it up there so it's
a little out of place to add more interest to the scene.

Well you're not so wrong, they were very far away and should appear much
smaller. The reason they seem so big is the camera's focal blur, the tiny black
dots appear as larger greyish things that look too big for their position in the
world. The next version of the image has a smaller flock that's a little closer
to the camera, meaning you can -just- make out the shape of the closest birds.
