I'd say you put a vertical ground fog (which we should then call "wall
fog") so the sphere's shadow vanishes. But apart from that I don't know ...

I was just thinking about writing plugins for photoshop. Do I need to buy
some special package for writing (and maybe compiling?) plugins or can I
already do it now?

I think you need that SDK in this case:
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/photoshop/index.jsp
Before starting that work I'd recommend to search through existing
plugins/filters. There are so many of them...

Perhaps it was, but didn't the sky and checker patterns
come from POV?

No. Everything was done in Photoshop using just its standard
features :)
As for pattern, I created 2D pattern first and trasformed it using
'Perspective' operation.
Sky was created by 'Clouds' filter.
Only everlasting idea was taken from POV-Ray :)
I have the idea to make some images in couples - one in POV-Ray
and one in Photoshop (with the same scene) and let you guess
which is which :)
