looks quite realistic, but what do those sphere-thingies have to do with it?
or are they simply filling up the scene?

Hi very nice
But here it is the musician speaking: if you look closely at a flute, you'll
see that holes are neither evenly diposed nor the same diameter
http://rhs.riverdale.k12.or.us/~audreyc/bqflute.jpg.
That is not an esthetic choice. It rather comes from more than one factor
including:
-The musical scale which is not even (1,1,1/2,1,1,1,1/2)
-The logarithmic link between tune and frequency: to get one octave higher,
you have to double frequency)
-Playability of the instrument: holes are displaced from the ideal location
to fit with fingers and their diameter is compensated.
So when I saw yours, the 1st thoughts that came to my mind were:
"Oh the pretty nice flute!"
then 1 sec later ( yes faster than writing or reading the points exposed
above :-)
"Err but I wouldn'd like to hear it played ughh!"

But I like you image anyway, and the "metal thingies" add a touch of mystery
(oh?)

Marc

Marc:

I did not think anyone would notice. :(

I actually play a number of woodwind instruments and I was working
off of images of transverse flutes that I found on the Internet. It was
just
easier to make six evenly-spaced holes.

The metal thingies were not intended to look mysterious. They are
just the background for the image. I tried to distribute them randomly
using the VRand_In_Sphere function from rand.inc. However, it doesn't
look like a spherical distribution to me (in two dimensions).

How do you tune two flutes?

Oh I'm sorry, I could'nt prevent myself :-)
I like your image anyway though I think I deserves to be corrected from that
flaw.
I'm not a woodwind but guitar and bass player though I'm interested by all
instruments making.

You lazy boy ;-)

Yes that's strange if not mysterious.
I didn't try that function yet.

Awww, that's a lovely little flute. I love it! Heck, it looks nicer than
mine! (I have a little banboo flute - not that I can play it! It's got the
whole two-tone burnt wood thing going on, but it's nowhere near as nicely
polished as yours ;-)

As others have mentioned, the human ear's perception of pitch is
logarithmic; therefore, notes that are spaced exponentially sound linear.
(If that makes any sense whatsoever!) Also - at least on my flute - each
group of 3 wholes are in a line at a slight angle diagonally across the
flute, presumably so it's easier to finger. (Ooo er! :-S What have I
said???)

Thanks.
Andrew.

Nice,

Is it possible that you post the textures that you have used on the image? I
love both the flutes texture, the spherical "thingies" texture and the
plane texture.

Best regards / Fernando

Unfortunately, I followed some bad advice about changing the image and it is
no longer what it used to be. However, the textures are really not anything
extraordinary.

The plane was something like this:

texture { pigment { color rgb <0, .25, .125> } normal { bozo } finish {
reflection .125 } }

The gyroscopes were something like this:

texture { pigment { color rgb <.25, .125, 0> } finish { reflection { .25,
.75 } metallic } }

The detailing on the flute using the same texture, with a bump_map to give
it a dinged-up
surface.
