I've been rendering some of my old images as zazzle posters, but when I came to
render this one I decided it just didn't look good enough. So I spent a few
hours re-working it, then a few more hours optimising the scene so the render
time was much faster. And then started a render at 7800x5200...

...then 5 days of rendering...

...But it got stuck near the end! After a few days of trying different things I
worked out what the problem was, and rendered the remainder of the image with
some different settings...

...2 more days...

And finally I had both bits of the image, but the low quality settings I've used
on the media meant the bottom section was slightly lighter than the top! So I
then spent an hour trying to hide this in paint shop pro (hey I'm not going to
spend another week rendering just to fix that!).

Anyway, I'm really happy with the result. It's much closer to my original idea
for this image. By way of comparison I've attached both versions, and there are
huge differences between them. There's still some small errors and some ideas
I'd like to work on, so I might revisit it again some time.

So what do you think?
Was it worth the effort?

BTW, if you *really* like it, the poster is available here:

It's wonderful that you are going back to that image. It is one of my
all time favorites. I like where you are going with it. The grass
isn't quite working for me though. Too straight and regular and perhaps
too green.

I think the new one is way better than the old. The new version is a
really impressive image, and the scale looks much more convincing, like
it is really ring-shaped planets, where the viewer is on the surface of
one of them. Even though the composition is the same, the scale looks
magnitudes bigger in the new than in the old, and I really like the
atmosphere, the birds, and the vast emptiness in the giant hole just in
front of the viewer. An effect the old one didn't have at all... My only
problem is that the clouds are paper-thin, and this is pretty visible,
and looks odd.

But all in all nice work!

Most impressive. (Don't think I'll spend just yet tho - wait until I get a
raise ;-)

Andrew.
