Thanks for all of your helpful suggestions,
most of which I've tried to take on board.
Hopefully it's better, not sure it's finished :-)
there's a bigger rendition, 1280x960, at
http://thyme.homelinux.net/Orrery.jpg
The oil painting is by Joseph Wright of Derby, 1766,
"A Philosopher Giving a Lecture on the Orrery"

I would've gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

It's a beautiful images, but don't you have the zodiac signs going the
wrong way round? In horoscope charts they always goes counterclockwise,
but, of course, I don't know if that is true for orreries too. (I didn't
even know there was such a word as "orrery", until you posted your image :)

They may well be the wrong way round, I just put them up in the order
they came out of the font :-) I'll reverse the order.
I got the font from http://www.widgetsworld.co.uk/font.php btw (font:
AstroGadget).
There's lots of astrology fonts available, but this is one of the
free ones.

Very, very good! I'm going after the larger size now: I'll use it as
wallpaper.
I like what you've done with paintings and the wallpaper.
The order of the zodiac signs is right for an orrery, assuming that
revolutions are clockwise. It should be that as the Earth progresses through
the year, an observer on the earth would see the Sun move forward through
the zodiac. Right now, the Sun in the image is in Cancer (opposite Earth in
Capricorn), and will move into Leo as Earth moves into Aquarius-- yeah,
that's right. The zodiac order is reversed in horoscopes since the daily
rotation of the Earth is being charted there.
Is the support wire under Saturn dipping into the base? Have you angled the
pictures out from the wall slightly?

I'm flattered :-)

Thanks for clearing that up.

Shouldn't be, and yes, in that order :-)
I found that the perspective is quite tricky with a wide subject
field. Pulling the camera back and narrowing the angle helps, as
I've had to do, but it might add other distortions of its own.
Perhaps that explains the support wire.

Maybe you should try an area light, because the shadows look a bit sharp!
But this sun I really like, because those flares ehhhh I really like 'em.

Actually the symbols should progress in a counterclockwise manner,
that's the way it was represented on all the orreries I used for
reference for the one I made for the "Worlds Within Worlds" IRTC round
(http://www.irtc.org/ftp/pub/stills/2002-02-28/orrery.jpg)
To read an orrery, the current sign (and month, if marked) is the one
directly opposite the Earth. That is, it's indicated by a line drawn
from the Earth through the center of the Sun. That's something I
didn't find out until after it was submitted, and therefore my signs
are rotated 180 degrees (D'oh!).
