Using my evil while loop and trace macro powers I managed to create a
dimensional breach to another dimension, and to summon this strange
thing into our reality (the POV-reality, that is). I call it steam-beast
because, well, steam emanates from it, and because it's a strange beast
from another dimension. The "blobby" refers to the way of how it was made.
As most of my images it is only meant to be used as wallpaper, that is,
you should not examine every little detail (and find the media artifacts
I've carefully put in there :-)), it's another background for a
screenful of icons.
And for those who want a version with better quality: I've put a
1280x1024 PNG version on

That pic is awesome! You should use scattering media for the
smoke though, for an extra amount of realism. Use a high enough
sample count to get rid of artifacts and tweak the scattering media
till it looks like smoke. It has a nice realistic feeling to it, as though
its a sculpture or such. I like it!

Actually it *is* scattering media, type 1, color White with a spherical
density and a color_map from Black to White (or vice-versa, I don't
remember now). I believe the reason why the steam appears black in some
areas is because no direct light reaches those media particles, so the
only light those particles will scatter is the ambient light. Which in
turn is rather dark. This can be seen near the top, where the same media
container (one of those with the clearly visible artifacts) is half
bright and half dark, the dark part being shadowed by the main object.
I also played with the idea of illuminating the steam from within the
orifices, but the render time would be insanely high.

One word: wow :)
It is very creative and very well done, congratulations.

Hm, if it already is scattering-media, play a
little with the extinction and add some absorption
value. It seems to glow too much. Otherwise,
as I've already said, nice work!

Looks kinda like my grandpa's still back on the farm, but better behaved :)
