i really like the planet, its atmosphere, and the ship. but what is the blue
patch below the ship that blocks out part of the shadow?

Ah. I started with the "benchmark.pov" scene and changed a bunch of things
to make it my own. I just discovered how that got there: there was a
"clipped by" in the original scene.
Here's a version with my own sky-- from a four-year old anim.

That looks good. Very nice atmospheric effect.
But why does the star in the distance have a black circle round it?

There is a fog on the planet.
If I left the fog alone, the star, incredibly far away, would be "fogged
out", even with setting a fog_offset. So, I have a scattering set up in the
media of the star. But the effect doesn't quite look right because as you've
observed, there is a black ring.
I think I'll go with the daytime scene. For most of my recent anims, I've
tried creepy dark settings and never got the effect quite right...

That's a good point, I've been having that problem with my booster effects
in fog :)
