Here is a render I did. Not sure if its finished yet (any advice on how to
make it better much appreciated).
Its inspired by a record (if anyone remembers what they are :-)) sleeve for
Atmosphere by Joy Division (if anyone remembers them :-)). You can see an
image of the sleeve here
http://www.cerysmatic.clara.net/Factory/index.html?joydivision6.html. I
thought it would be fun to try to do this with POV (a 30 hour render later I
was wondering if it was such a good idea).
The sleeve itself is detail from work by an artist called 'Jan van Munster',
whom I know very little about. His site is here http://www.janvanmunster.nl/
Anyway, any comments appreciated.
BTW I rendered this on my laptop, I've never seen it on a real monitor so if
its a little dark thats why, please let me know.
Regards
Darren Hewson

Of course we remember Joy Division. Joy Division
rulez. I'm wondering what exactly in this image
could have taken 30 hours!

Mmmm, most likely a combination of a slow computer (500mhz Pentium 3, 256mb
RAM) and me doing some unneccessary things in the POV code caused this to
take 30 hours.
I'm sure lots of people have rendered neon tubes before but I found it quite
hard to get the effect I was after.

That IS art, man! It is different enough from the original that I'd say
you've made it your own. I guess there is probably not as much story behind
it. Or is there? How did you create the ropes? Did you model them or use
a sphere sweep? I like how you also added a multiplication sign by having
the knots be X's. If you want suggestions on how to improve the fluorescent
lights, I might be able to help. Check back to my earlier post, "My Lamp
Design." I can send you the source, or post it in pbsf if you'd like. I
don't know if it'd hurt or help your render time though.

Thanks, glad you like it.
Cables are sphere sweeps.
I'm here to learn and would love to see the source for your lamp, its very
kind of you to offer.

Darren,
I am glad to contribute my work to the pool. I pared down the source
code to just the stuff I thought you would benefit most from. All the csg
for the base and the top would just get in the way, and it's nothing special
really. I will post the source into the povray binaries scene-files group.
I also would apreciate a little help on an element of it, which I will
describe there. Here are sample images for it, one without the lampshade,
and one with it down all the way. The source is photons-ready, but I didn't
use them here 'cause I wanted to post the images sooner. The render times
aren't too long without the lampshade, so it might be just what you are
looking for. To get a neon version, use the same materials, but just change
the color for the media a bit.
