Taking a flight to Seattle this Christmas so figured that was reason enough
for me to try and make a jet using bicubic_patch. First time I ever really
dealt with them this extensively, if you can call it that. Only hand-coding
from the POV editor with some CSG for the windows and engines. Not too hard
to do or I'd have never gotten this far.
Kept thinking someone else has done this before me, I know I sure haven't.
Hopefully I can get the parts to fit together better later, and use more
than just a single photo to model from. I think I'll try a 727 next.

That looks really good, though the colours remind me a bit of the plane form
Austin Powers! :)
I'd suggest doing a render from close up so we can see more of the details, and
change the texture so it looks more like a real one (apologies if it's based on
a real one, I've obviously not seen that design!). Also make it more reflective
with a smaller specular highlight, it looks too plastic at the moment.

It could be the perspective. I might actually have that tail rudder too
small still. They're huge in comparison to the plane's size. I really need
to do this modelling by a diagram and not a photo. I tend to go about this
sort of thing in the wrong way, looking for a moment at a picture and then
going on memory of it. If I can find a diagram of the jet's design I'll use
orthographic camera and backdrop image map to get a much better model.
I do have one for the 727 already but it has a engine built into the tail so
I went with the 737 this first go. The graphic for the 737 apparently didn't
load before, now that I recheck the airline's web site I used earlier.
Just now found scale drawings that will help me do this at
http://www.boeing.com/assocproducts/aircompat/plan_manuals.html
The scale drawings are awful though, I'll have to use the "descriptions"
links instead.

What details? ;-)
Only details you can't see now would be the overhead compartments (long,
slightly angled boxes) inside, without any seats yet and the lights are off
so it would render faster.
It took me forever just to get the metal of the wings to look about right.
There's a great deal of difference if I change assumed gamma, or brilliance
in the finish. There's some reflectivity in everything but that foggy air
really changed the final render. I had used blue sky and clouds without any
ground before. I'll work on it, checking more photos especially. I might end
up having to employ radiosity too, but early attempts were not successful
for some reason. Lost shadowing, or so I thought.
BTW, CSG is a real pain with bicubic_patch. It works, but POV doesn't
believe it according to the error messages. I haven't figured a way to get
them to be solid either, if at all possible. New thing for me.

If I would own an airline, I would use different colors to paint my planes,
but the hand-patched model looks very good.
But jet planes always remind me, that I still own a one-dollar-share of
PanAm, well ehem, I mean the paper, you know...

Here's what I have so far. Try to ignore that paint scheme for now. ;-)
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wasn't totally off the mark to
begin with. The major error was length. I had the tail end stretched too
long. The tail rudder height was about exact though. It's funny how the tail
doesn't look like the photo I was starting with, must be perspective. The
wings were only slightly too long actually but much too wide and thick. The
nose was too short also, and the cockpit windows quite a ways off. I have
plenty that needs to be done yet and the bicubic patch vectors are already
straining my brain.
