Hi!
It's funny, I began working on a discoball 2 days ago,
and yesterday someone posts its own ;-(
Nevertheless I'm posting mine now, although it's an
"alpha-release" of the image I'm making. (It's black n white,
color will follow later - not now, its 1:52 am here)
It's also meant to become an animation later.
I'd like to hear your comments and criticisms.

You've got it just right. The ball and its reflections look just like
they should do. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the scene.

It's going to look great - please let us see it when it's done! I'm getting
my ABBA albums ready now!

Are these photons?! If they are, you've done a heck of a good job at
them. I am almost certain they are not, though, so would you please
share the secret? :)

Thanks.
No secret. They are the default options, spacing 0.02.
I'm rather happy how it came out, cause I'm using photons
and radiosity for the first time.

Like Peter, I'm also surprised how well photons work. What was the render
time?
For the scene: I think that you should add media and model a lamp, but
presumably that's you planned anyway.

3 minutes for 1280*1024 AA0.3 (on Athlon XP 1900 - 512 MB RAM)

I've put the Ball into another room already, this was just
"proof of concept". An for the media: I'd love to, but I never
worked with media before. The one test I made did not
function at all. Maybe you can help me?
Later today I'll post a beta of the scene I'm making.

Hi all!
First I wanna thank you for all the pleasant comments.
##############################################
Second, here's the beta version!
The party room is made after an existing one here in my town.
Cause I'm not very good at texturing, I'll write my (current) textures
down here and like to hear your suggestions how to improve them.
(The scaling is one pov unit ^= 1cm)
Outer walls and ceiling:
pigment { rgb <1,1,.5> } normal {granite}
Pillars: (nasty, I think I'll replace them with isosurfaces maybe)
pigment { rgb <1,1,.5> } normal {crackle 5 scale 5}
Floor: (not done at all, just rgb .6)
"dancing area":
pigment {
crackle
color_map {
[0 rgb <1,.8,.5>]
[.1 rgb <1,.8,.5>]
[.1 rgb <1,.8,.5>*.8]
[.3 rgb <1,.8,.5>*.8]
[.3 rgb <1,.8,.5>]
[1 rgb <1,.8,.5>]
}
scale 5
}
finish { reflection .1 }
##############################################
Third, I'd like to add media later, but the first experiment failed.
The render time was horrific, and the spots were gone, but no
sign of media was seeable. Any hints?
##############################################
Fourth, I made an prewiev animation.
320 frames, 320x240, png images, no AA
designed for 16 fps
Unfortunately, I haven't any Idea how to make mpeg1 from
png images. Please tell me how I can do that.
##############################################
Last, sorry for my english.

I would suggest constructing a very simple room with he same proportions as the
current scene, but with only one mirror.
Getting the beams to show up is going to be tricky - mainly because it would be
hard in real-life. I suspect that the beams are there in your failed attempt,
but not showing against the background.
