I thought you might enjoy an update onthe status of this project.

Still a lot of modelling to go on the ship, mostly in the rigging and in the
sails. As you can see, textures are still my weekness.

This is my first experience with trace. I use it to position the ship on the
surface of the water and to allow it to roll with the waves. The wind
direction and speed also determines how much the ship rolls, but I am still
tweeking this function.

The water is generated using waves.inc. Though I am not happy with the
texture of the water.

I lookforward to your criticism because I could use it.

It looks as though you should scale the waves smaller? Also, have you read
Christoph's water tutorial (I assume the waves.inc was from Christoph's site,
but just in case):

Tom,

I wanted to have long rolling swells, so I scaled the waves large. I am
struggling to get the faceted texture found in real waves. Yes I am much in
dept to Cristoph.

Hi,

I remember your project. It's nice to see you haven't given up, and
obviously you know how a sailboat should look (better than I do). Textures
could be improved, and the enviroment (light and reflections). But these
things usually slow down a rendering, so you should finish the modelling
first.

Here's a few hints: The ropes change between visible and invisible. This is
because you use a cheap Anti-Alias. It renders faster but kills some
details. Try these settings: +AM2 +A0.15 +R2 -J

The sky is too simple. You could try to imitate a real atmosphere:
http://www.vterrain.org/Atmosphere/  (the best link I could find right now)

Water needs finer details.

I am currently using a AA setting of +A0, but will try your settings.

I have been experimenting with fastclouds.inc, but am not satisfied with the
results yet (Water & Ship alone currently require approx. 8 hours with
radiosity, so atmospheric work comes slowly). I'll take a look at your
links.

Lol, in this case it is a class of sailing vessel. 2 Masts & square rigged.

+A0.0 is even better but you need the other settings too, for the thin lines
to remain visible all the way.

I'm not aware of any clouds that cast realistic shadows, unless you use
media, and that means 'slow' clouds... Btw, I don't think you 'need' clouds
for the image to become realiastic.
