hey guys!
i read the thread about gears some days ago and decided i should give it a
try. well, i ended up with a small macro which produces all kinds of gears
(well, of course only the ones i found in images from the web). here is an
example pic with some random generated gears.
i've got some questions concerning this special picture:
- i used focal blur to set the focus on the golden gear. do you think it's
ok that way or should i increase it or even skip it? i'm not really
satisfied with the way it looks right now...
- i could'nt figure out a nice normal for the gears. at the moment, they are
looking well, boring ;-) i tried a low-scaled granite normal, but it looked
like they were made of stone (think that's what a granite normal should do
*g*)...
i'd be glad if you could help me with these thingies...
greetings & thanks,
florian

For my gears, I used a plain old bumps normal, scaled enormously (x10000
I think) in one direction to give a "brushed" effect. I needed 2
versions to allow the pattern to show up on the tops and the sides of
the gears properly, but this was not a problem.

Some rather impressive looking gears you have there! OK, maybe the texturing
is a little dull, but the shapes are certainly good. Not only do these have
teeth, they also have spokes and holes and... Nice work!
Andrew.

You might want to try Rune's brushed textures.
